Welcome to Miss Kurtz's First Grade

Miss Kurtz

Welcome to First Grade! I’m Miss Jaimie Kurtz. This is my third year teaching first grade at St. Mark School. In May 2014, I graduated from Salve Regina University (Newport, RI) with a Bachelor of Science. I currently am attending Sacred Heart University to receive my Masters of Art in teaching. I also am working towards my Remedial and Reading Language Arts Certification. Everyday I love coming to St. Mark School, working with my students and seeing them grow academically, socially, and physically. Each day I learn something new from my students! In my spare time I love running, yoga, reading, and spending time at the beach! I enjoy spending time with my family, friends, and puppy named Mollie!
First grade is a year where a ton of learning takes place. The students come to me reading simple stories, and leave reading chapter books! We start the year off reviewing our numbers, basic addition and subtraction facts and leave knowing how to count money, tell time, measure, and add/subtract double digits. In writing the students work on personal narratives, informational writing (teaching books) and opinion writing. It is a very rewarding year for the students themselves, the parents, and me-the teacher! I want my students to have a love of learning, and eager to come to school each day. I try my hardest to make lessons engaging, hands on, and fun-all at the same time. I teach the students strategies that they can use in all subject areas, and love using songs and poems to help students remember skills. I also like to incorporate craft projects into all of our learning.
